The Steadfast Servant

Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:19-23

“If indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.—Colossians 1:23

Joseph’s brothers did everything in their power to stifle his dreams of greatness. Their plot to murder Joseph became a decision to sell him into slavery. That slavery resulted in Joseph’s exaltation instead of his degradation. David’s position as the youngest made him the family sheepherder and an afterthought when Samuel came to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as king of Israel. Later, David was chastised for coming to see the battle against the Philistines, yet it was this brash young man who became a giant slayer, warrior and king of a nation.

There is something extraordinary about the approach Joseph and David took in the face of opposition by their own families. Both stayed in tune with what they saw as their purpose. They did not buy into what others said about them, devote time to hurt and anger about their betrayal or chastisements, nor plot revenge against those who doubted or betrayed them. Instead, they kept their faith in God and their eyes fixed on doing what they were called to do. Whether Joseph was a servant or an inmate, or David was a warrior or a king, both focused on steadfast service, day by day, moment by moment.

Steadfast service, especially in difficult times and at defining moments, seems to prompt God to come to our rescue. Time and again, we see people who have been denigrated, overlooked, counted out and passed over become people of victory and honor. The barren, ostracized, and prayerful Hannah gives birth to the priest and prophet Samuel. The lowly but hardworking Gideon becomes a savior and judge for his people. The prostitute Rahab who places her faith in the God of Israel, becomes part of the lineage that produces King David and Jesus.

Steadfast service to God in the face of opposition, temptation, slander, and betrayal matters. It shapes and defines our character and speaks volumes to those who quietly watch to see how we will respond to challenges and injury inflicted on us. Steadfast service to God keeps us focused on God, not our circumstances. It keeps us humble and useful, at the right time and place to glorify God. Steadfast service aligns us with the will of God and prepares us for greater challenges and even greater opportunities to make a difference in our world.

Today, if you are facing a moment at which you must decide to remain steadfast or give up, stay the course. Be a steadfast servant!

Question to Ponder: What is hampering your ability to be a steadfast servant to God?
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”—1 Corinthians 15:58
