Assessing Net Worth

Scripture Reading: Romans 5:6-11

“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”—Romans 5:6-8

In simplest terms, net worth is the value of our assets minus our liabilities. In one form or another, net worth is a metric financial institutions use to determine our financial health and solvency. If our liabilities come near or exceed our assets, lenders may deny our loan application or charge us higher than normal interest.

Like those financial institutions, we have people in our lives who readily point out how our liabilities, failures and baggage exceed our assets, successes and value. Greatest amongst those critics is our eternal enemy, Satan. He is a constant accuser who reminds us of our faults and missteps—our liabilities. His greatest audience for indicting us? Ourselves. Many people are quick to believe testimonies of their worthlessness offered by Satan, other critics and even themselves.

But God has established a different metric for assessing net worth, one not based on personal liabilities, nor dependent on assets. It stands independent of the opinions of our critics. It even defies what we think of ourselves. It is based purely on God’s eternal, unconditional love for us.

Here is documentation of God’s love, “…while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” We bring no assets to the table to merit God’s love, only the liabilities of our sin and failures. But God has made a determination to love us. Not because of anything we possess, done or know. God loves us so immensely, so intensely that Christ died on the cross to grant us freedom from sin and reclaim us as His own. Not simply because God loves, but more importantly, because God is love.

Too many think so little of themselves when God, The Almighty, the Creator of all things, the Alpha and Omega, declares our worth is so great, the life and blood of the Son, Jesus was shed for each of us. Today, if you face an obstacle that brings in question your worth, or if you encounter someone who questions their value, be reminded that God determined our worth so valuable that Jesus died for us. Yes, we all have liabilities, but Jesus indeed paid it all! Be encouraged!

“Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain—He washed it white as snow.”

Question to Ponder: Despite what anyone says about your worth, God says you are worth the life and blood of Jesus. Who are you going to believe?

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?”—Romans 8:31-32
