The way to my home is off of a two lane road that leads to a major military training installation and the training headquarters for a major federal agency. Needless to say, it’s a pretty busy road, not only from the traffic, but as a result of ongoing construction projects designed to accommodate the growing traffic.
On occasion, a visually impaired man can be seen on the road, with cane in hand, walking along the road’s edge. There’s no sidewalk, only a shoulder that is a combination of grass, dirt and rock, with several uneven surfaces along the path. Yet, he walks along unaided, with the exception of his cane.
As I drive by, I marvel at his courage. Even more, I admire his faith.
Perhaps he has faith in his training and senses to keep him safe throughout his travels. He may even have some measure of faith in the drivers who whiz by, that they will see him, look out for him and do the right thing in terms of respecting the space he needs. Above all, he must have faith in God to guide and protect him as he negotiates the roads to his destination.
This man walks by faith, not by sight. Walking by faith isn’t for the fainthearted but for the ones who put their faith in God above their fear of the unknown. Walking in faith recognizes the sovereignty of God and trusts Him to exercise dominion over every issue, every person who impacts our lives.
Today, as you face any fears of uncertainty over the future, think about that blind man. And just keep walking.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”—Proverbs 3:5-6
