Read Mark 1:21-39
“When they found Him, they said to Him, ‘Everyone is looking for You.’ But He said to them, ‘Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth.'”—Mark 1:37-38
As Mark records in this portion of scripture, Jesus’ popularity is on the rise. Each sermon, each miracle elevates His popularity with the people, who press for Jesus to perform more miracles. In the midst of the growing fame, Jesus retreats for quiet time, early in the morning, to pray. When found by the disciples, who channel the enthusiasm of the crowds seeking Him, Jesus remains grounded and unwavering in His purpose—to preach the Word of God.
There’s something about a person who knows and pursues their purpose; one who remains focused on the vision for their life. They’re resolutely fixed on their intended course, refusing to be persuaded by supporters or dissuaded by detractors.
It can be difficult to remain focused on your purpose, especially when you’re pulled in every direction, even by well-intended people. In a world full of needs, we can find ourselves surrounded by noble and worthy tasks beckoning us to help mend life’s issues. Sadly, there are more causes than you can address; more needs than you can fulfill. We dilute our ability to do what only we can do when we try to do all others would have us to do. Even Jesus didn’t heal everyone. Out of the multitude of people at the pool of Bethesda, the Bible records Jesus selected one man to be healed that day (John 5:1-9).
How to stay in relentless pursuit of your purpose? Do what Jesus did frequently—retreat to prayerful solitude during the early, quiet moments of the day. Before the noise of the world beckons you otherwise, take the time to speak with God, and the time to listen to Him.
The only one who can confirm your purpose is ready to reveal that plan…just ask Him. Then pursue your purpose!
Lesson to Remember: We dilute our ability to do what only we can do, by trying to do all others would have us to do. Pursue YOUR Purpose!
“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.”—John 12:27
I am reading this today, must have missed it in April. I appreciate it and it is meant for me today. I have been praying about being pulled in so many directions. Recently, I was asked to be chaplain of my women’s club that I personally organized many years ago. Yesterday I felt a bit shy when asked to pray aloud. I did. I want to be a purposeful chaplain. Please pray with me that I will fulfill my role. Also that I take the time to focus and have a prayer ready, that it’s from my heart…and that I fulfill my duties by remaining focused and on task.
Thank you, Nat, for guiding us with a good word that is applicable!
What a wonderful blog! Pursuing your purpose is something as Christians we need to focus on more in our daily lives. Thank you Deacon Harley for bringing this to us. Be blessed!
Bless you my Brother. May we all seek to find and relentlessly pursue our purpose! NH
